The Human Health and Performance Contract at NASA/Johnson Space Center is seeking a Nutritional Biochemist to support our Biomedical and Environmental Research Department. This position will provide laboratory support for the Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory (NBL) at the NASA-Johnson Space Center (JSC).
This role supports both spaceflight operations projects and research studies to advance future exploration missions. The Biochemist will work closely with the NBL lead and other Nutritional Biochemists to:
- Process and analyze biological samples and implement multiple existing and new analytical methods for NBL projects using complex laboratory instrumentation
- Manage data in line with established policies and best practices, and process data for interpretation
- Conduct statistical analyses and document procedures and quality-control methods in conformance with ISO-9000 and CLIA requirements
- Provide technical support and/or act as a study/project coordinator for NBL protocols and studies
- Review data acquisition and analysis processes and develop SOPs for defined testing
- Become proficient in standard laboratory assays and protocols
- Assist with developing laboratory assays and writing protocols
- Assist with preparation of data summary charts as required
- Maintain QA/QC documentation for identified equipment and procedures
- Assist with maintaining QMS documentation
- May participate in testing involving human subjects
- Attend weekly laboratory meetings as required
- Other duties as assigned
- Ensure compliance with Safety, Health, and Environmental plans; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws, company safety policies, and rules; must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management staff
- Ensure compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures
- Maintain a regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
- Complete all assigned training
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 10 years of experience
OR
- Master’s degree in Nutrition, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 7 years of experience
Experience
- Demonstrated experience performing analysis and data acquisition with complex laboratory equipment including HPLC and LC/MSMS
- Knowledge of and the ability to learn analysis and data acquisition on additional laboratory equipment including ICP/MS, AAS, and ELISA
- Strong proficiency in analytical methods development and troubleshooting
- Demonstrated laboratory technical skills and ability to process human biological samples
- Ability to evaluate, select, and apply analytical skills to laboratory problems
- Demonstrated skill and experience coordinating complex study protocols
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced demanding work environment
- Must be able to prioritize multiple, competing assignments
- Ability to provide technical leadership and manage a project to completion
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical data and results via technical reports, oral presentations, scientific writings
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
Additional Requirements
- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
- Laboratory Requirements include the ability to utilize full hand function to include grasping and feeling is required
- Standing/walking; climbing/stooping/kneeling; lifting/pulling/pushing: 20 lbs. or greater is required
