General Description

JOIN OUR TEAM AS A LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT!

Complex and specialized administrative and analytical work as a Legislative Assistant to an elected official. Acts as a representative of a County Commissioner, and as a conduit to the County administration. Duties include: planning, drafting correspondence, coordinating functions, researching, speaking in public, and dealing with political, confidential and sensitive issues requiring a high degree of discretion and tact.

Essential Job Functions

Supports all of the respective commissioner's goals and objectives.

Attends Commission meetings, special events, forums, and other advisory committees and meetings, as required. Plans, creates, and coordinates special events. Assists County Commissioner with time management by reading, researching, and routing correspondence; drafting letters, memoranda, and documents; collecting and analyzing information; and initiating telecommunications. Meets with citizens, and directs inquires through appropriate channels.

Attends public functions at the direction of the County Commissioner; may be required to do presentations on behalf of the commissioner to community groups, charitable organizations, HOA's, or businesses to present updates on Pasco County projects.

Maintains files and records for the Elected Official's immediate office. Prepares a variety of routine and special reports from source material in files, and confidential materials. Maintains control records for associated boards or councils and informs officials as vacancies occur. Coordinates presentations for awards, proclamations, retirements and certificates of appreciation and notifies recipients. Maintains a high degree of discretion and protects operations by keeping information confidential.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a public forum.
  • Ability to ascertain priorities to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to make decisions autonomously.
  • Knowledge of County government, procedures, and departments.
  • Knowledge of business English, mathematics and legal formats and terms.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and Microsoft office applications.
  • Knowledge of ordinances, official functions and personnel procedures.
  • Ability to work independently on complex and confidential administrative tasks, compose effective and accurate correspondence and deal with non-routine and complex tasks without recourse to supervisors.
  • Ability to deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to independently prepare agendas, legal documents, resolutions, ordinances and related complex or confidential correspondence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills a must; ability to build and maintain relationships on behalf of Pasco County.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Business or related field. Three (3) years of administrative experience OR an Associate degree and five (5) years of administrative experience. Previous marketing or management experience strongly preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
