Work Experience Description:
Ideal for students who have begun gaining relevant experience and are building their skills through internships, part-time jobs, or significant projects. Typically aimed at sophomores or juniors who have completed a combination of introductory and advanced coursework.
Copy editor mentors three to five writers and edits their stories. They also help with training and planning. They write headlines and captions for the monthly Ke Alaka'i magazine. Applicants are required to take a copy editing test, and if they haven't worked for the Ke Alaka'i before, they need to also write a 500-word news story story about anything that would be of interest to our readership. It needs to include quotes from at least three local people and needs to be an actual news story we can print - not just a sample story with made-up quotes.
Additionally, you should write your story in news format ... meaning you start with your thesis statement first without any introduction. Then the story needs to be formatted so the most important information is included first with the least important information last and no conclusion. Your reader should be allowed to make their own conclusions from the information you give them rather than you stating your opinion. This is called inverted pyramid style writing. This style of news writing began during the U.S. Civil War when reporters would send their stories to the newspapers over telegraph lines. They never knew when the war would cause the telegraph lines to go down, so they learned to always send the most important information first.
