Under direction of the news director, this role collaborates in story idea generation and production of audio, digital and video content for WAER Syracuse Public Media. They also serve as liaison and mentor to students at the Newhouse School who are collaborating with WAER-FM. The Senior reporter / professional in residence expands expands the reach/coverage abilities of the WAER newsroom and plays a role in student mentoring, recruitment, training, and professional development. This critical journalist monitors news trends and stays on top of regional topics that contribute to listenership and statewide partners; builds and maintains a community around a beat locally, statewide and nationally; connects with private and government organizations, individuals and experts within Central New York (CNY), and statewide decision makers who impact our region; covers breaking news in CNY and beyond (outside the scope of the beat and standard 9-5 business hours as needed); and actively participates in WAER fundraising campaigns/community events. This individual contributes daily story ideas, experiments with innovative storytelling techniques, and develops distinctive audio/digital stories focused on the WAER listening area, with statewide and national context/impact. Education and Experience * Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism or related discipline. * Demonstrated experience producing and creating content across multiple platforms, some large market experience preferred. * Five years or more experience as a working journalist, producing content regularly. * Anchoring/hosting news programs helpful. * Experience leading a team to help mentor students. * Teaching or training experience preferred. Skills and Knowledge * The successful candidate will have at least five years of journalism across multiple platforms, including audio. * Teaching or mentoring experience with students or volunteers is a plus. * Experience and proficiency in broadcast technology including studio equipment, field audio equipment, digital audio editing, multi-platform production experience, video production/editing, web content management system software experience, and social media. * Knowledge of AP style, broadcast writing, and editing over multiple platforms both for her, his or their own work, and to edit student work. * Familiarity with Public Media mission, approach, and news direction is helpful. * Demonstrates experience in news story generation, as well as experience leading a team in order to mentor students. * Microsoft Office Suite proficiency helpful. Responsibilities * Produce news content across multiple platforms for WAER, an NPR affiliate station at Syracuse University. Story content will focus on local interests to Central New York residents for radio, web, social media, etc. * Research, vet, pitch, report and produce a mix of daily news, two-ways and features for radio, web (waer.org), and social media. * Gather, write, edit, voice and report live, when necessary, for daily newscasts. * Produce audio, digital and video stories, and content for all platforms (radio, web, social media, etc.). * Develop distinctive audio and digital stories focused on the WAER listening area, with statewide and national context and impact. Fill-in host/anchor duties when needed. * Collaborate on story ideas with News Director for professional staff and student reporters. * Monitor news trends and stay on top of regional topics that contribute to the greater Syracuse listenership and our statewide partners. * Build and maintain a community around a beat (locally, statewide, and nationally). That includes connecting with private and government organizations, individuals, and experts within Central New York, as well as statewide decision makers who impact our region. * Build a network of informational sources to provide a pipeline of exclusive and compelling stories toward the NPR Driveway Moment brand. * Consistently meeting news deadlines. * Attend community events to both build topic knowledge and sources and represent the station in community engagement. * Serve as mentor to Newhouse students who are working at or collaborating with WAER, and work in partnership with them. * Leverage the alignment of WAER under the Newhouse School's umbrella to create new opportunities for student content to be distributed via WAER's platforms. * Help guide student growth, story, and skill development, professionally edit student content, and otherwise assist in their professional development. * Assists in student recruiting, training, and retention, along with other News Department staff. * This role also has the opportunity to teach in the Newhouse School as an adjunct, building a teaching resume, with management approval and not to interfere with regular duties. * Other duties as assigned in, but not limited to WAER news department, including assistance with station fundraising, and production assistance for marketing and underwriting Physical Requirements Not Applicable Tools/Equipment Not Applicable Application Instructions In addition to completing an online application, please attach a resume and cover letter.
