Job Title: Assistant Engineer (Ocean Towing)
Position: Assistant Engineer - 1st 2nd 3rd
Location: Seattle Marine
Department: Ocean Fleet
Schedule: 45-60-day hitches
Reports to: Chief Engineer & Port Engineer
Pay Range: $115,000 - $125,000 annual (EXCLUDES OVERTIME & TRAVEL IS COVERED BY FOSS)

Summary of Position: The Assistant Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, preservation, operation, and readiness of the ship's propulsion machinery, mechanical and electrical systems, and damage control equipment. The AE is also responsible for fueling, pollution control, liquid load and ballasting, logs and record keeping, procurement and inventory control, and storage and accountability of all HAZMATs. Depending on the vessel, the AE may act as Chief Engineer or the engineer in charge of a watch in a periodically unmanned engine room.
Qualifications:
* Valid USCG MMC
* Assistant Engineer - Oceans, Any HP, Limited - 1600 GRT/3000 ITC License (may sub 3a/e, 2a/e, or 1a/e Motor License)
* Valid STCW with all required endorsements (including, but not limited to Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, Advanced Firefighting, and Medical Care Provider)
* Lifeboatman Endorsement
* Valid TWIC
* Valid Passport - must be able to travel internationally with no restrictions
* CPR/First Aid
* A physical and pre-employment drug test are also pre-requisite of employment.
Essential Functions:
Vessel Maintenance
* Troubleshoots and repairs all engines, pumps, machinery, deck machinery, and electrical components
* Maintains proper markings, tags, and color coding of various systems
* Responsible for general housekeeping of engineering spaces
Safety
* Responsible for proper maintenance of onboard alarms and safety systems
* Responsible for safety of personnel in engine room
Miscellaneous
* Responsible for monthly engineering reports to be submitted to management
* Utilizing the company's maintenance software(Helm) for tracking and executing preventative maintenance.
* Maintains vessel parts inventory levels
* Works on deck as needed: handles lines, makes/breaks tow
* Other jobs as directed
Supervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff
* Supervises and trains junior engineers on maintenance procedures
* Serves as Foss "Field Representative" during major machinery overhauls
* Performs all Vessel Maintenance System - Engine Room inspections
* Trains deckhand-engineers in preventive maintenance procedures
Knowledge & Skills:
* Strong maritime background with a thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities/limitations
* Ability to independently implement all routine engineering procedures
* Implements appropriate casualty control measures in response to engineering casualties
* Reads/interprets technical data, specifications, and drawings
* Basic knowledge of welding and burning procedures and hot work safety precautions
* Ability to safely transfer fuel and oils
* Knowledge of MARPOL regulations and pollution prevention procedures
* Maintenance and operation of bilge, ballast, fire, fresh water and sanitary systems
* Ability to communicate, in English, across all written, spoken and listening levels
Working Conditions: Works in engine room in hot, wet, humid, noisy, and odorous conditions. Occasionally exposed to paints, solvents, thinners, and fumes.
Physical/Mental demands:
* Sitting: Sits to complete engineer logs and reports
* Balancing:Balances continuously on vessel in various sea and weather conditions
* Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Kneels, crouches, and crawls to pick up tools and perform checks, repairs, and general maintenance of machinery
* Twisting/Reaching:Twists and reaches around equipment to perform checks and repairs
* Standing/Walking:Stands/walks while performing engine checks and repairs
* Handling/Fingering:Handles/fingers hand tools, hand-held power tools, and parts
* Eye-Hand-Foot Coordination: Coordinates movements to perform engineer and general maintenance duties
* Vision:20/40 correctable vision in each eye to work with equipment and machinery. Color vision is required to distinguish color-coded systems and liquid chemicals
* Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying (up to 50 pounds):Pushes, pulls, lifts, and carries machinery up to 50 pounds.
