The University of Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic, liberal arts university located in Leavenworth, Kansas, just 25 minutes away from Kansas City. USM serves about 1,400 students at its main campus in Leavenworth, its satellite location in Overland Park, as well as online. POSITION SUMMARY: KLC Peer Tutors assist students with reading comprehension, math, writing, research skills, and/or concepts key to the field in which the student-employee tutors (English, math, science, theology, history, etc.). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Assist students with reading comprehension, math, writing, research skills, and/or concepts key to the field in which the student-employee tutors (English, math, science, theology, history, drawing etc.) • Participate in tutor training sessions offered by the Keleher Learning Commons • Adhere to Keleher Learning Commons Code of Ethics • Develop and conduct presentations and skill shops on academic success related topics • Maintain accurate records of all tutoring sessions • Comply with deadlines for items such as time cards • Complete the Federal Work Study orientation • Perform additional duties as assigned PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Recommendation of USM faculty member • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing (Freshmen may be considered on a case by case basis) • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 • An A or B in each of the courses tutored OR demonstrated knowledge of the subject ( Example: Student has not taken Precalculus because they started their first college semester in Calculus I, but they can tutor Precalculus as it is considered prerequisite knowledge for Calculus I) • Ability to abide by guidelines regarding student confidentiality • Strong communication and teamwork skills • Ability to manage tutoring schedules and reporting procedures • Possess a willingness to explain the same material in different ways with patience and an understanding that everyone learns differently TO APPLY: Submit a cover letter, resume and contact information for at least three current professional references.
