Position Purpose Contribute to the DBS Underwriting Department in bringing depth of understanding of Life Underwriting principles, and breadth of industry experience and relationships to support internal and external customers in delivering customized, value-add solutions to their clients. This is a full-time opportunity working a hybrid schedule from our Minneapolis, MN office. We will consider a fully remote schedule for experienced candidates. The work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM CT. Functions: This job description is not intended to be a complete and exhaustive statement of the requirements of the job. It is more representative of what is typical of this job. * Contribute to the overall success and profitability of the agency. * Work with the Chief Underwriter, Case Design Analysts, Case Managers, Relationship Managers, Carrier Underwriters, and advisors where there are known underwriting challenges on DBS business. Develop an action plan to secure needed results via quick quoting, informal or formal case processing as appropriate. * Summarize medical records and read underwriting manuals. * Work independently to review and fully develop files within case split. Package and present files using your discretion and judgement to our carriers in ways that stand out from our competition. This involves possible client interviews, broker interviews, detailed case analysis, Chief Underwriter consultation, creation of compelling cover letters and/or quick quotes and working with our carrier partners to place DBS business effectively and efficiently. * Stay apprised of each carrier specific underwriting strengths and niches in order to target the right carriers for our business. * Consult with advisors about transactions where the underwriting offer differs from what was expected. Effectively negotiate with our carriers, possibly select another/more appropriate carrier, offer tips to the broker for delivery of the offer. Provide information to Case Design Analyst to produce quotes. * Accurately answer questions posed by our agents on potential business. This involves utilization of all available tools including but not limited to quick quoting, XRAE, carrier guidelines, underwriting manuals, etc. * Participate in Underwriting Department education of our internal and external customers - seminars, articles, webcasts, lunch & learns, etc. * Contribute to the Underwriting Department's cycle time analysis and actively work toward minimizing overall cycle time. * Participate in the Underwriting Department's creation and maintenance of DBS underwriting forms (i.e., DBS Trial App, DBS Authorization, DBS Release Form, DBS health questionnaires). * Assist the Chief Underwriter in mentoring and training the Underwriting Assistant. * Create and maintain strong relationships with all DBS carrier underwriters. Participate and attend industry, underwriting related, associations and meetings. * Actively pursue insurance industry designation such as FALU and FLMI. Qualifications Experience: * Minimum 3 years of life underwriting insurance experience. * Strong Communication Skills, both written and oral. * Strong organizational skills. Leadership/Team Participation: Must be able to work effectively in a diverse group of people as a leader and team member. Analytical Skills: Ability to gather and analyze data to help manage DBS's business for optimal efficiency and profitability. Ability to assimilate goals and objectives from a variety of sources, serving a variety of needs, and formulate an approach as to how best meet these needs that addresses not only the problem at hand but the overall strategic direction of DBS. Ability to plan and prioritize projects and make recommendations. Business Knowledge: Develop and maintain a strong understanding of DBS, our clients, the products, services, and approaches. Achieve a high degree of familiarity with the various roles and responsibilities within the organization and how they relate to/depend upon the various initiatives and day-to-day execution of DBS's business. Develop and nurture strong relationships with clients both internal and external, vendors and industry organizations.
