The Fowler lab currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 2. POSITION PURPOSE We are a diverse, driven group developing cutting-edge genomic technologies to quantify the effects of genetic variation at scale, engineer genomes and understand cellular function. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the team. Working with Dr. Fowler and other members of the lab, they will drive ongoing projects and explore new ones by performing experiments, developing assays and analyzing data. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and taking on leadership roles. The Fowler lab is strongly committed to equity and diversity. The Department of Genome Sciences, part of the University of Washington School of Medicine, focuses on answering critical scientific questions by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches. In particular, we are making major contributions in the application of genomics to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences boasts a collaborative, integrated environment supported by a diversity of academic disciplines. We also work with a multitude of others both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has been highly successful, expanding since its beginning in 2001 to 61 training, teaching, and research faculty with annual grant awards of $38M in FY24. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform standard microorganism and human cell line culture and molecular biology techniques - 30% Drive ongoing projects and explore new ones by performing experiments and developing assays - 25% Analyze data and troubleshoot experiments, both independently and as part of a team - 25% Participate in training new lab members - 5% Provide written and oral status reports to the Principal Investigator - 5% Contribute to journal articles and figures as requested - 5% Participate in lab meetings, including presentation of work - 3% Perform related duties as required - 2% MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in chemistry, molecular and cellular biology or a related field, and two years of related, professional laboratory experience to include: Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Pathogen detection technologies Experience processing samples in a BSL-2 Environment Ability and experience overseeing all functions of a lab, including but not limited to operations, products, and personnel Outstanding academic and professional track record, including experience as a medical scribe training consultant Experience with surpervising research staff and students Innovative and analytical thinker, with a disciplined and organized approach Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an interest in collaborative work, including the ability to communicate on specimen and molecular pipeline progress Self-motivated, enthusiastic and driven to grow Experience using specialized laboratory equipment such as: MagNA Pure 96 and Kingfisher technologies as well as QuantStudio 6 platform DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience with contemporary molecular biology, functional genomics and large-scale experimental approaches Experience culturing human cell lines Experience with flow cytometry and FACS Experience with high-throughput DNA sequencing Ability to receive, record, aliquot, and store incoming specimens Data analysis competency (e.g. using Python, R or equivalent) Application Process: The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
