ASSISTANT PROFESSOR- ARBORICULTURE AND URBAN FORESTRY
AS PART OF TREE and ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION PROGRAM CLUSTER
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is building a faculty cluster in Tree and Ecosystem Restoration Program (TERP). This cluster will enhance SUNY ESF's leadership role in addressing tree and ecosystem restoration at state, national and international levels. We are hiring five tenure-track positions in three departments: Forest Biotechnologist & Director of TERP, Plant Tissue Culture and Transformation Biologist, and Restoration Ecologist in the Department of Environmental Biology; Plant Biochemist in the Department of Chemistry; and Arboriculturist/Urban Forester in the Department of Sustainable Resource Management. We invite applications for an academic-year (10-mo) tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. This position will contribute to supporting Forest Health in the northeastern United States and beyond through substantial participation in the TERP cluster, an expansion of the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project (https://www.esf.edu/chestnut/about.asp). We seek a teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to both scholarship and engaging students in the classroom and through research mentorship at the undergraduate, MS, and PhD levels. The successful candidate will be expected to build an internationally recognized extramurally funded research program in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry.
Arboriculture / Urban Forestry The successful applicant will join the Department of Sustainable Resources Management. Research should be focused on restoration and stewardship of suburban and urban areas with an emphasis on tree care and management. In addition to culturing and caring for trees in association with the Tree and Ecosystem Restoration Program, there will be opportunities to work with other clusters at ESF at the nexus of water and energy/carbon (e.g., Water Science and Bioeconomy clusters). Teaching responsibilities include introductory classes in arboriculture and urban forestry as well as an advanced class in the applicant's area of expertise.

Required Qualifications:
* PhD in arboriculture, urban forestry, forestry, natural resources or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
* Track record of publications in high-impact journals and successful grant writing.
* Demonstrated capability as a teacher and mentor of both undergraduates and graduate students.
* Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in research, teaching and service activities.
* Professional experience (e.g., industry or outreach) in the areas of Arboriculture and/or Urban Forestry.
* Credentials and engagement in a related professional society (e.g., Certification as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture).
* Collaborative potential with researchers in related disciplines such as ecosystem management, soil science, hydrology, applied conservation, urban wildlife, entomology, or forest pathology.

The Department, College, and broader Community: The successful candidate will join the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (www.esf.edu/srm). The Department is the second largest at ESF with nearly 30 faculty, 60 graduate students, and 350 undergraduates. SRM undergraduate majors include Forest Resources Management, Natural Resources Management, Forest Ecosystem Science, Sustainable Energy Management, and Construction Management. ESF's more than 25,000 acres of forest properties include the Adirondack Ecological Center (https://www.esf.edu/aec/) which serves as a basecamp for teaching and research in a near-pristine 15,000 acre portion of the Adirondacks. The SRM Department houses The Ranger School, our Wanakena campus in the northwestern Adirondacks that for over 100 years has provided technical training (Associate in Applied Science degrees) in Forest Technology, Environmental and Natural Resources Conservation, and Land Surveying Technology, with a near-future program option planned in tree care in line with arboriculture and urban forest on main campus. Our department is home to the Bioeconomy Development Institute, the Bioeconomy and Renewable Energy faculty cluster, and the Climate and Applied Forest Research Institute - all of which are catalysts for transdisciplinary research. We seek to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to sustain program excellence and offer varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing. The Department hosts the oldest, and today one of the largest, combined programs in sustainable resources management in both natural and built systems in the nation. Our forestry program is what started ESF in 1911, so is the oldest and still central degree program at ESF.
The college is located in Syracuse, New York, a dynamic and diverse community with plentiful natural, cultural, and civic opportunities. Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes, Syracuse is within a five-hour drive of New York City, Toronto, and the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains. SUNY-ESF is one of eight colleges and universities located in Onondaga County. The Syracuse University campus is immediately adjacent to SUNY-ESF, and SUNY Upstate Medical University is located within easy walking distance.
The SUNY-ESF campus provides a rich array of curricular and co-curricular experiences with our main Syracuse campus just southeast of downtown Syracuse and our regional campuses stretching from southern Onondaga County to the Adirondacks. The Syracuse area, home to our main campus, is home to many cultural events, museums, state and local parks and numerous festivals throughout the year along with a growing downtown in the city of Syracuse. Onondaga County provides a variety of neighborhoods that include urban, rural and suburban with strong schools, affordable housing and supportive communities.
