Our Downstream Processing team is seeking an experienced Process Chemist who will assist our team in developing scalable processes to separate and purify bio-derived Key Starting Materials and APIs from bench to Pilot scale and support technology transfers to manufacturing scale. The scope of DSP includes identifying and understanding fate of impurities and matrix component interactions, product stability and degradation mechanisms, identifying unit operations and key processing parameters to establish operating ranges that meet customer specifications and target COGs. You will leverage your proven skills with other team scientists and engineers to meet project objectives. This position requires the ability to work cross-functionally with Biology, Analytics, Operations, Manufacturing, Business Development, Quality and Regulatory to develop sustainable processes that produce in specification products in the timelines established. Responsibilities:
* Develop DSP processes that are shown to be scalable, meet timelines and COGs
* Establish key unit op parameters based on robustness to meet specifications and recovery yields
* Characterize downstream process streams and identify matrix components and chemical interactions on a mechanistic level that impact unit op behavior, yield and product purity.
* Maintain mass balance data for all DSP processes and ensure mass balance closure on processes as well as intermediates and products
* Experimental design and data analysis
* Provide documentation as standardized by the team including reports in support of Technology Transfers
* Comply with safety protocols and ensure the safety of co-workers
* Comply with Regulatory and DEA documentation requirements when required for handling, storage and disposal
* Support project teams to deliver on project goals
* Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Chemistry, or related field with 2-3 years industry experience, or BS/MS and equivalent experience leading into a Scientist role.
* Hands on experience with separation and purification techniques, to include: liquid-liquid separations, adsorption columns, chromatography columns, single stage evaporation, and crystallization. High preference for small molecule experience.
* Experience with chemistry process scale-up (up to 20+ grams)
* HPLC analysis
* Design of Experiment
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
* Able to work onsite in Menlo Park, Monday - Friday
Nice to haves (but not required):
* Experience working at pilot scale (kilo scale)
* Experience writing and supporting Tech Transfers preferred
* Data analysis expertise using tools such as JMP
* Management or mentorship experience
Additional Information:
Full-time base salary range of $145,000 - 165,000 plus an annual bonus potential and equity opportunities.
* Scientist II: Title and compensation will be based on level of experience with requested qualifications.
