The Dallas Morning News is seeking a versatile journalist with deep experience writing about and reporting on Dallas for a new column to be launched on the opinion pages. The city, its history, its government, its culture, and its future will be the focus of this columnist's work. The successful candidate will already be sourced with Dallas knowledge and contacts and will write with a strong, distinct voice. This writer will be expected to submit 2-3 columns per week. These columns should include unique reported stories and/or offer context, history, and clarity to issues and events happening in Dallas and around North Texas. The writer should have demonstrated investigative reporting and narrative writing skills. Because this writer's columns will appear in the opinion section, we also expect the writer to offer a perspective. Columns should reflect well-informed, fact-based perspectives while maintaining journalistic integrity. The successful candidate should also be experienced in other media, including broadcast. This position reports to the Commentary Editor in close coordination with the Editorial Page Editor. Job Responsibilities * Pitch and write 2-3 columns a week that focus on Dallas and the region with a focus on government, history, community, or culture. * Develop sources to bolster original reporting. * Write long-form narrative columns, investigative columns, and quick-turn daily columns. * Be prepared to work in other media, including podcasts, broadcast, etc. Job Skills * Ability to write quickly and accurately about a variety of topics. * Excellent news judgment and reporting skills. * Ability to juggle multiple tasks at once. * Familiarity with digital media and headline writing, with an interest in expanding readership of opinion content. * Experience growing and engaging audiences through digital platforms and social media. Job Requirements Job Requirements * A Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Significant experience (typically 10-15 years) in professional writing, with a focus on opinion journalism. * Deep knowledge of Dallas and the region. * Spanish language proficiency is highly valued and may be advantageous for certain stories.
