Description
The City of Roanoke is seeking a skilled Carpenter to serve in the Department of General Services. This position involves performing a variety of mechanical and structural repairs and maintenance for City of Roanoke-owned facilities and equipment. The technician will work primarily in rough carpentry, surface preparation (such as chipping and painting), and general building upkeep.
Key Responsibilities:
* Perform maintenance tasks including cleaning, servicing, repairing, and replacing roofs, windows, doors, siding, caulking, flashing, and gutters on city-owned buildings.
* Assist in developing and maintaining a database to track the condition of all city roofs, buildings, and structures, which will help in scheduling routine maintenance and identifying replacement needs.
* Follow detailed instructions from the supervisor/foreman to complete assigned tasks.
* Review plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine the required materials and sequence of repairs or installations.
* Perform rough and finish carpentry, including tasks such as resurfacing concrete walkways, maintaining facility equipment, framing with wood and metal studs, and installing/removing ceiling systems, carpets, VCT tiles, ceramic tiles, drywall, wall trim, and doors.
* Engage in more specialized tasks such as sandblasting, brick/block laying, and demolition as needed.
* Operate equipment like a backhoe or skid steer as required (training will be provided if necessary).
Qualifications:
* Basic carpentry and general building maintenance experience.
* Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders.
* Willingness to learn and use new equipment and technology.
* Physical ability to perform manual labor and operate machinery as required.
