Overview Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to preform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. May exercise technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. This position will be in support of The Department of Anatomy Physiology and Genetics at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. The Research Assistant I is to support molecular studies of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and will be trained and supported to generate preclinical models of TBI and to provide state-of-the-art cellular molecular biology support for next-generation sequencing applications and immune cell profiling. The Research Assistant I will have opportunities to learn transcriptomic and flow cytometry methods and to gain expertise career advancement in the biomedical sciences. The project will investigate the potential of a naturally occurring protein, pregnancy-specific glycoprotein 1 (PSG1), to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI). PSG1 is secreted by the placenta during pregnancy and has broad anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to activate the cytokine transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β). We will test the hypothesis that PSG1 treatment post-injury will induce anti-inflammatory immune cell responses in the circulatory system and brain to improve functional outcomes in mouse models of TBI. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. The site background requirement for this position requires that you have lived in the US for three out of the past five years. Responsibilities Isolates and makes quality control assessments for ribonucleic acid from a single cell/nuclei and brain tissue section samples. Independently generates diverse types of sequencing libraries. Profiles, isolates cell populations by flow cytometry. Provides general cellular and molecular biology support as required. Provides surgical support for pre-clinical models of TBI. Makes detailed observations about project performance tasks; provides data analysis and interpretation. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role. Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines involving mRNA and/or protein expression analysis. Knowledge of and skill in immunology and/or neuroscience experiments in small rodent model systems Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust/CAC. Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree Minimum of 0-2 years experience required Work Environment This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting. Compensation The hourly pay range for this position is $18.25-29.47.
