Description

The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Fire Prevention is seeking a Deputy State Fire Marshal I. Deputy State Fire Marshals perform inspections of existing public buildings for compliance with state fire/life safety codes. These inspections ensure that safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems and other necessary equipment are maintained in satisfactory condition. Inspectors meet with property owners and occupants to achieve the necessary corrections. Currently, the Division of Fire Prevention uses the 2018 NFPA 101 "Life Safety Code" to inspect existing buildings.
Key Responsibilities:
* Performs inspections of existing public buildings for compliance with state fire/life safety codes. These inspections ensure that safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other necessary equipment are maintained in a satisfactory condition.
* Learns to review field inspection reports.
* Meets with property owners and occupants to achieve the necessary corrections.
* Provides training to those who request programs.
* Performs or assist with fire investigations to determine cause and origin, assist law enforcement personnel, and may examine fire incidents that result in fatalities.
Preferred-Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Proficient communication skills.
* Possess sufficient technical knowledge of the 2018 NFPA 1, National Fire Protection Association and 2018 NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.
* Proven abilities to manage multiple projects.
* Conduct effective code research.
* Demonstrate attention to detail.
* High level of customer service.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of experience in mechanical trades installation or inspection; or two years in skilled building trades; OR one year as a fire prevention inspector in a fire department; OR one year as an inspector with the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction; OR one year of experience performing fire/life safety inspections with a private industry or other government agency; OR must have three years as a Fire Chief or a similar administrative position in a fire department.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: An associate's degree in fire science technology, architecture, engineering or related fields will substitute for the two years of experience. Related technical training in skilled building trades will substitute for up to two years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Within six months of employment, employee is required to pass the Kentucky State Fire Inspector I test administered by the Division of Fire Prevention. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification (s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Frequent travel within assigned inspection territory with occasional overnight trips. May respond to fire incident scenes at all hours of the day or night.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
