POSITION SUMMARY
This position is for individuals with less than six months experience as a swim instructor. During
the training and certification period, an employee in this position works with a Swim Instructor (Level 2 or 3) and on occasion may work independently with students following specific direction and instructions from a Swim Instructor (Level 2 or 3). In this position, the employee will learn how to lead swim classes in the water effectively and efficiently, create and implement a lesson plan, work directly with class participants, and discuss students' progress with parents or guardians. In this position, the employee will be expected to have the proficiency to organize and lead a class independently, understand the required skills needed for students to pass each level, and will need to complete all required training and certifications before moving to Level 2 Swim Instructor.
SCHEDULE
The schedule for this position is for Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM and Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:00 PM for the school swim lesson season during February - May. This is a part-time position with variable hours depending on the Astoria Aquatic Center hours of operation and events. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Performs water safety and learn to swim instructional activities, while maintaining a safe
and positive learning environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Manager and in coordination with the Recreation Coordinator and Head Lifeguards.
* Teaches skills and strokes according to the performance standards for each level.
* Encourages and helps foster an environment which promotes water safety, learning in a positive and fun manner and encourages students to become lifelong swimmers.
* Prepares instructional objectives and lesson plans for each class.
* Follows outlined guidelines for each class/level.
* Adapts teaching approaches to the age, experience, and ability of participants.
* Provide positive and productive communication to parents regarding their children's progress at least three times throughout the course of the swim session.
* Completes records and reports as needed.
* Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations.
* Possesses a basic knowledge of facility's emergency action plan and understands the secondary role their position is expected to perform in an emergency.
* Demonstrates understanding of and adheres to all safety regulations and practices.
* Proactively and frequently participates in facility cleaning. Including but not limited to; sweeping, mopping and sanitizing floors, wiping down and sanitizing surfaces, taking out the garbage, picking up debris, cleaning restrooms, laundering hand towels and lost and found items, etc.
* Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers and patrons including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure
* Attends scheduled trainings.
* Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance and adheres to the published schedule for shift times and dates.
* Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows dress code protocol where assigned.
* Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
* Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor.
* Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas.
* Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others. * Must be 16 years or older.
* Possession of or ability to pass an Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Certification, including CPR & First Aid certification.
* Ability to physically perform all skills required of a Swim Instructor.
* Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal and sex offender records checks.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
* Prior swim instructor or lifeguard experience.
* Previous experience working with children and young adults.
* Prior experience working with the public.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees must be able to physically perform all duties of the swim instructor role which includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds is required and includes the ability to assist conscious and unconscious patrons in distress out of the water and on the deck including use of a backboard.
Employees are required to communicate verbally, follow instructions and protocols and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility or in the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Employees must remain alert and vigilant with the ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility requiring close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus to keep an effective scan pattern and keep a visual of the entire bottom of the pool and assigned zone.
While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles (Chlorine).
