The North Carolina General Assembly is seeking a highly qualified professional to work as a Legislative Clerk in a Legislator's office. Legislative Clerks assist Legislators, also known as Legislative "Members" of either chamber (the Senate or House of Representatives), in fulfilling their public obligations by providing support services in the areas of administration, communication, research, and public relations. This position requires a high level of organization and accountability as well as the ability to perform independently and maintain composure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
This position is a permanent, full-time position. Days of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, when the two chambers are in session, evening work may be necessary and occasionally weekend work may be required as the job duties demand, based on the needs of your Member. This position is under the direct supervision of the Member and has no direct supervisory responsibilities, unless requested by the Member to assist in the supervision of an intern.
Examples of Duties (The Legislative Clerk will be given a wide range of tasks, projects, and duties, including, but not limited to, the following):
* Office management, email, and calendar management
* Drafting correspondence and constituent newsletter
* Coordinating with other Legislators and staff on policy initiatives and legislation
* Coordinating with state agency liaisons to fulfill constituent requests
* Conducting research into various public policy issues
* Identifying and monitoring district specific issues
* Creating and monitoring communication strategies for the Member
* On-boarding, training, and managing interns
* Other items related to the Member's official duties
* Other tasks assigned by the Member
* Ability to present information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
* Practical knowledge of the elements of reference and policy research
* Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, research software, and Adobe Acrobat DC
* Ability to maintain composure and work cooperatively under pressure with Legislators, legislative staff, and the public on a daily basis
* Ability to work independently, organize and analyze materials, and prioritize tasks
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle politically sensitive work
* Ability to work objectively and impartially both with respect to members of both political parties and with respect to issues of state
* Willingness and ability to work extended schedules
* Undergraduate degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preference will be given to those with the following:
* Outstanding record of academic achievement
* Strong record of leadership in an academic, professional, and/or extracurricular setting
* NC General Assembly positions are NOT subject to G.S. 126 - State Human Resources Act.*
