Steps to take to start your career as an Instructor and other jobs like it
- There is a broad range of subject matters these types of roles can cover that can match with anyone’s interests. Choose an area you have a passion for, have some prior experience with and want to learn more about.
- Instructor and Educator type jobs don’t have the same formalized education requirements as teachers but they do require that people in these roles have minimum levels of specific subject matter knowledge. That may be developed training for the job or it may be a requirement to apply. Do your research.
- Some areas require instructors to be licensed or certified. Research the specific requirements in your area and job. Some of these certifications may also require a minimum level of education and even advanced degrees.
- Having prior experience speaking or organizing groups, even if it’s in a different subject area than the job you are interested in helps you separate from other applicants. These show you have experience with the soft skills needed for these roles.
What I Do:
Hi, I am Serena and I work for a non-profit marine science educational institution and it focuses on aquatic life in San Francisco Bay. So my official title is I am an educator slash instructor and so what that means is I teach kids about life at the marine science institute.
Career Skills:
The main skill set that you need to do this job is going to be mostly public speaking and a background in biology, hopefully aquatic biology of some sort. We also work on a research vessel as crew and so be able to lift heavy objects also if they require.
Career Tips:
If I had any tips for people looking to go into marine science I would not go into it expecting to make a lot of money. It's not a job that pays very high but for me I'm super passionate about it. I've loved marine science since I was little and so for me I feel like I don't really work a day in my life because I really love what I do.
Career Goals:
What I'm looking to do is to go back to school in the near future and get my master's so that I can be working in a lab to do more hands-on research. So that is my end goal but this is a really cool stepping stone for that path.
