<h2>My Career Path in Construction Management</h2><p>My current job title is Vice President of Finance, and I work for a construction company.</p><p>The way I got into this role is by earning a degree in construction management. Most people with that degree start as project engineers. From there, they might move up to senior project engineers, assistant project managers, project managers, and eventually senior project managers or executives. However, very few transition into a role like Vice President of Finance.</p><p>For me, the opportunity came while I was a senior project manager. The company I worked for had an opening for a CFO, and after 12 years in project management, I became curious about what a CFO does. I raised my hand and expressed interest, asking to be taught the role. From there, I stepped into the position and eventually became Vice President of Finance.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Current Role Responsibilities&nbsp;</h2><p>An average day or week in this position involves financial analysis of the company's projects, profitability, and relationships with owners. Beyond that, a key focus is maintaining relationships with people within the company. I spend a lot of time connecting with our teams on a personal level, which fosters trust and open communication. This helps ensure that teams feel comfortable sharing both good and bad news.</p><p>When challenges arise, I work with executive staff and project teams to get projects back on track for success. Managing the finances of each construction project is a major responsibility. Project teams send me detailed reports about financial performance and client, consultant, and design team relationships. I use this data to guide teams strategically, ensuring projects remain successful or addressing issues proactively.</p><h2><br></h2><h2>Pros and Cons of Construction Management</h2><p>The role has its pros and cons. On the positive side, the financial rewards of being a construction executive are significant, providing a comfortable living. However, the stress level can be high due to the weight of responsibility. Finding work to keep employees secure is one of the biggest challenges but also one of the most rewarding aspects when you succeed.</p><p>While it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to reach this level, the journey is incredibly fulfilling, especially knowing that your efforts contribute to the success of both projects and the people involved.</p>

<h2>How I Got Into This Role</h2><p>I'm the general manager of small family winery in Sonoma County. I chose this job after a birthday trip to Northern California and a passion for wine. It was just the ability to wear many hats and work hard and learn as much as you could. General managers at larger wineries, however, would likely have gone to maybe a management program. They would have to have leadership skills to run a team in a tasting room as well as production at larger establishments.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><h2>Winery General Manager Average Day</h2><p>The average day here for me revolves around a lot of customer outreach and answering emails from customers, usually club members. Then it kind of morphs into handling any guests that come into the tasting room and also helping the wine maker with anything that they might need, and reporting all things up to the owner.</p><p><br></p><h2>General Manager Pros and Cons</h2><p>Pros to this job is working in a beautiful place, being connected to nature with agriculture, and then serving up delicious wine to lots of interesting people that visit from all over the country. Any cons to this job would likely just be that you do have to wear a lot of hats, which is fun and interesting, but a lot of times that can be stressful, especially in busier times of the season.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><h2>Tips for Getting Started</h2><p>If you wanted to get into winery and running a small winery or even a large winery, the best thing to do is just to get the experience, always starting out in a tasting room, shadowing a tasting room manager, and then getting yourself into that position and then trying to really shadow a general manager of the winery. Really the important thing is to get your foot in the door just by being extroverted, willing to work with people, and again, really willing to learn.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><h2>Career Tip From My Experience</h2><p>What I would have done slightly differently is probably educated myself a little bit better, whether that would have been with some of the local junior college classes having to do with more of the business side of wine. I was familiar with wine and I can work with people easily, but running the business side, I would say really get yourself familiar with running a business.</p><p><br></p>

Their role is to keep records, assess material quality, movement and expenditures, and manage the distribution of supplies in the organization.
