Steps to take to start your career as a Veterinary Assistant and other jobs like it
- While formal education is not always required to get into this field, not having the specific trainings, education and certifications will limit your opportunities and growth. Completing a veterinary assistant program or certification course can provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for the role. Look for programs offered by community colleges, vocational schools, or online institutions. These programs typically cover topics such as animal anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, veterinary office procedures, and animal care techniques.
- Veterinary assistants need to possess a range of skills, including animal handling and restraint, basic medical procedures, and client communication. Develop strong communication skills, both verbal and written, as you'll need to interact with clients and other members of the veterinary team. Attention to detail, compassion for animals, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are also important attributes for veterinary assistants. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills, experience, and certifications.
- Seek volunteer or internship opportunities at veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or animal rescue organizations to gain hands-on experience working with animals. Previous experience working with animals, such as pet sitting, dog walking, or volunteering at animal-related events, can also be valuable. Establishing a relationship with professionals in the field through these experiences will help you build knowledge of what the day to day job is like. It will also give you exposure to people who can provide practical knowledge of how to land a more permanent opportunity.
- While certification is not always required, obtaining certification as a veterinary assistant can demonstrate your commitment to the profession and enhance your job prospects. Organizations such as the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) offer certification programs for veterinary assistants, which typically involve passing an exam and meeting certain eligibility criteria.
Vet Assistant Job Requirements
This is a pretty entry-level job, but I would say that some job requirements for it would just be being flexible, being willing to learn, being kind. You do need to be familiar with animals. You need to know how to handle them, be able to read them. And also, you have to be able to read the room that you walk into. There's a lot of interacting with other people as well.
Vet Assistant Job Duties
I check all the kennels in the back to see if we have any patients staying with us, any patients' updates that I need to be aware of. And then I check all of the rooms and I'll make sure that they're all clean. I'll go to our schedule, and I'll see what appointments we have scheduled for the day. And then we'll start welcoming in patients and their owners. And we'll just go through each appointment through the day and take care of the animals. I help clean up from surgery, so sanitizing all the tools.
Interesting Aspect of Job
Seeing an animal come off of anesthesia, it was actually really wild, and it was kind of an intimate experience. It’s just really humbling, being able to sit with somebody that is so vulnerable and make them feel loved and cared for.
Vet Assistant Job Perks
Number one, first and foremost, you get to hang out with really cute animals all day long.
Another thing is that you get to learn really great communication skills with your clients and with your coworkers, because it's always a bustling place in a vet clinic. I would also say that you pick up a lot of really great random skills. A lot of the skills in the vet medicine field are really transferable over to the medical field.
Cons of Veterinary Medicine
Some of the cons that come with veterinary medicine are having to see animals suffering and having to put down animals. But I think that we can also build really great connections with our client base based on the way that you handle those emotional experiences. It's really great being able to be there for others to select some of the positive things that can come out of those cons.
