Their role is managing and coordinating the program once it's up and running, assigning interns to various departments, managing site supervisors, and giving feedback to students during their final evaluation. Their responsibilities are reviewing and approving the internship application, coordinating and participating in career fairs, and acting as a liaison between the student, educational institution, and the internship or placement provider.
Steps to take to start your career as an Internship Coordinator and other jobs like it
- Work on developing the skills necessary for a coordinator / senior coordinator role. These may include strong organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and the ability to multitask effectively. Coordination in a professional setting leverages many of the same skills as coordinating activities and tasks in your personal life. Take the lead in coordinating events and other elements of your life as a way to practice and build coordination skills.
- Specific training and education around coordination doesn’t hurt but getting a role as a coordinator can be done without these things. The education and training just give you an advantage over others and it will help make you a better coordinator. Consider pursuing courses or certifications in project management, leadership, communication, or related areas to enhance your skills and knowledge.
- Having a history working in a corporate setting or having leadership aspects to a non-corporate job is a great start to moving into a coordinator role. In order to make a switch to this discipline, you need to demonstrate you have some understanding of the environment you will be coordinating.
- Take on leadership responsibilities within your current role or seek out opportunities to lead projects or teams. Demonstrating your ability to effectively lead and coordinate others is essential for showing you have the skills needed to take on a coordinator role and move to more senior ones.
What it's Like to Be A Senior Coordinator
Ultimately, in a senior coordinator role, you are really a foundational individual in your colleagues' ability to get their work done and to complete projects. So they're relying on you to make sure that all the logistical components are taken care of.
Coordinator Pros
I think the pros are if you're somebody who really enjoys orchestrating and overseeing large projects, who likes to collaborate with a lot of different people, if you want to see the many, many different arms of an organization, if you're still kind of in that exploratory phase of your career, or you're looking to switch careers into a different industry, this is a great role to give you access into that and to be able to understand what's out there and how a lot of the pieces of the puzzle fit together for the organization or industry that you're in.
Coordinator Challenges
You might be in charge of executing on a project's success, and there's a lot of individuals that are also a part of a project's success, but you're not their direct manager. Oftentimes, they're a peer or you're even a few steps under them. So you are leading with influence oftentimes, and that can be something that requires a lot of finesse. It requires a lot of interpersonal skill development and understanding the goals and needs of others in your organization and the organization itself.
How to Become a Senior Coordinator
So to get into a senior coordinator role, the best thing to do is really to start out in a coordinator role. This is a great way to get exposure to the different things that a senior coordinator can do or might do. You're going to often work with other senior coordinators.
I would recommend absolutely finding a mentor, someone who can really sponsor your growth and is invested in your growth in the role.
